About Stillsea
A quiet corner of the internet where you can slow down and breathe.
Our Mission
Stillsea exists for one reason: to make science-backed breathing exercises accessible to everyone, everywhere, at no cost. We believe that something as fundamental as breathing well should never be locked behind a paywall, a subscription, or a required sign-up.
Stress, anxiety, and sleeplessness are increasingly common in modern life. Yet one of the most effective tools for managing these challenges is something we already do thousands of times a day — breathing. The difference lies in how we breathe. Research from institutions including Stanford University and numerous clinical studies has shown that structured, intentional breathing patterns can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, lower cortisol levels, reduce heart rate, and promote calm within minutes.
What We Offer
Stillsea provides a curated set of guided breathing exercises, each grounded in scientific evidence and clinical practice:
-
Box Breathing (4-4-4-4) — Used by Navy SEALs and first responders, this equal-ratio technique is proven to reduce stress and sharpen focus under pressure.
-
4-7-8 Breathing — Developed by Dr. Andrew Weil, this extended-exhale technique helps calm the nervous system and is widely recommended as a natural sleep aid.
-
Coherence Breathing (5-5) — A balanced rhythm designed to optimize heart rate variability (HRV) and promote physiological balance throughout the day.
Each exercise is delivered through an interactive, animated timer that runs entirely in your browser. No app to download. No account to create. Just open the page and start breathing.
Our Approach
We designed Stillsea around three principles:
- 1
Evidence first. Every technique on Stillsea is selected based on published research and clinical evidence. We do not promote unproven trends or pseudoscientific claims.
- 2
Simplicity over complexity. Breathing exercises work best when they are easy to follow. Our interface is minimal by design — a single visual guide, clear phase labels, and nothing else competing for your attention.
- 3
Free and open. All exercises are free to use. We sustain the project through non-intrusive advertising, so you never have to pay to breathe better.
